St. Matthew School Fall 2016

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis said he wanted his trip to Sweden to focus purely on promoting Christian unity, although in the end, he added a day to the visit so he could respond to the "fervent request" by the country's small Catholic community that he celebrate a Mass for them.

Hope amid fear: Ministries reach out to faithful divorced

Fear and loneliness. These are emotions commonly felt by Catholics going through a divorce.

There’s fear of judgement. There’s fear of the change that the death of a marriage brings. There’s the accompanying loneliness. And, there’s the assumption that the change has to be endured without support from a church community.

Pray to the finish line

The last stop for this year's tumultuous presidential election season, which for so long seemed like a remote intangible, suddenly is within our sights. Soon, Americans will cast ballots for their preferred candidate. Unfortunately, for many American Catholics weighing their options -- and their consciences -- the choice is a difficult one with no ideal options.

NEW YORK (CNS) — Popular culture's relentless drive to portray a homosexual lifestyle as merely one more form of diversity and its view of out-of-wedlock motherhood as a respectable choice, at least for mature women, mars the otherwise unobjectionable animated comedy "Storks" (Warner Bros.).

NEW YORK (CNS) — It seems obvious that bank robbery, especially in real life, makes a better subject for drama than for comedy.

And nothing in the Zach Galifianakis vehicle "Masterminds" (Relativity) — a comic recounting of the 1997 "hillbilly heist" from an armored-car firm in North Carolina — does anything to undermine that easily-arrived-at conclusion.

Deepwater Horizon
NEW YORK (CNS) — Audiences of the 1970s were fed a steady diet of fictional disaster movies. Ocean liners capsized, skyscrapers burned and planes were imperiled.

Whatever the nature of the threat, endangered characters, whether plucky or pusillanimous, tried to see it through in the conviction that (to quote the popular theme song of 1972's "The Poseidon Adventure"), "There's got to be a morning after."

One woodsy Oregonian's call to the priesthood

Brent Crowe didn’t intend to leave his life behind when he became a Catholic.

But the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults team at Sacred Heart in Medford saw it coming.

“All of us on the RCIA team felt that Brent had a calling to the priesthood,” says Ann Brophy, pastoral associate. “We just sensed it.”

A True and Living Icon
The Church must be ready and willing, as Pope Francis has exhorted us, to accompany people on their spiritual journey. But the Church must always remain faithful to her mission and to her Savior in proposing the path that leads to true happiness, holiness, peace and joy.

For a parish on the fringe of the Portland metropolitan area, St. Philip Benizi here is an international hub. There are major Hispanic and Filipino communities.

Students raise prayers, funds for children with cancer

It was a fitting weather combination for a day that acknowledged both heartbreak and joy. After raining all morning, the drops let up as soggy but smiley students wound their way down a muddy incline and gathered with an estimated 400 peers for Mass.

“Today is about amazing kids who get out of bed on a rainy day … to make the world just a little bit better for the kids who can’t get out of bed,” Regina Ellis told the teens. Ellis founded the Children’s Cancer Association more than 20 years ago after losing her 5-year-old daughter, Alexandra, to the disease.
