Remember praying for enemies?
When I go to church on Sunday, during the Prayer of the Faithful, I hear prayers and petitions for those we care about, and rightly so. However, I recall something that Jesus said about praying for our enemies being a bigger challenge.

His history is off
When Bush invaded Iraq illegally, Saddam had no WMD. Even the United Nations could find none. He had been sanctioned for 10 years. That’s history!

Sadly, you can't un-see 'Tusk'
There is no compelling reason even for devoted fans of writer-director Kevin Smith to take in his misguided gross-out horror-comedy "Tusk" (A24). Worse, if you see it, there's no way to un-see it.

(O)n average over the past 10 years, 67,298 adults annually have been baptized Catholic and 83,050 baptized Christians annually have been 'received into full communion'" with the Catholic Church in the United States.

New living will raises concerns for end-of-life
Planning for end of life situations is important. We should put in place an advance directive before our health takes a serious turn for the worse and we are no longer able to indicate our own wishes or make our own decisions. Advance directives can be of two types: living wills and health care agents.
A summer of change
We have been going through some very significant changes at the Pastoral Center, the “headquarters,” if you will, of the Archdiocese of Portland, serving the many parishes and schools of western Oregon.  I can say without hesitation that these changes are not easy, but that they are timely and needed for us to move forward with the work of the New Evangelization in this local Church.
Approach difficulty with love, kindness
Q — In Southern Oregon we are blessed with dedicated, loving, spiritual and generous priests and deacons. They each have special talents and gifts to share. We want to learn from them and understand their point of view. But many of them are not native English speakers. We cannot understand their words when delivering homilies. I and others in my parish agree that we are frustrated to only understand a small portion of what is said. The final consonants of words are missing so listeners don’t know what is being said. Or the syllable emphasis is incorrect. Sometimes after a few sentences you can figure out what that word must have been. But then you have missed lots in between. So what do parishioners do? Tell the speaker they can’t be understood and make them feel bad? Call the church office and make the speakers feel bad? And one more question. Does the archdiocese have an education plan to improve non-native speakers’ diction?
