A year of prayerful events and projects aimed at bringing people together along with efforts to bring improved education and jobs to urban youth should be our focus as we strive for progress in these areas.

Wise leaders needed now more than ever
Jesus Christ is not running for public office this year, so we have no choice but to select candidates who are less than perfect. Wisdom does not demand perfection, but it does require intelligence, experience and, above all, good character.

Our segregated schools
This fall, millions of children already disadvantaged by the burdens of poverty will return to failing schools. Only when the fate of black and brown and white students is intertwined can our country go beyond interminable reform battles and move on to build an education system that our children deserve and our democracy demands.

Fantastic Four does disservice
The misfortunes of its principal characters become mildly miserable for the audience of the glum sci-fi adventure "Fantastic Four" (Fox). Parents of the teens at whom this origin story, drawn from the Marvel Comics series, is squarely aimed will want to be aware, moreover, of late scenes featuring some harsh bloodletting. These forays into mayhem make the downbeat film doubtful fare even for older adolescents.

Guy Ritchie takes on U.N.C.L.E.

Another cultural landmark of the baby-boomer generation returns to the foreground with the arrival of the breezy espionage yarn "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." (Warner Bros.). The droll humor that punctuates director and co-writer Guy Ritchie's adaptation of the mid-1960s television series, as well as the James Bond-style glamour that permeates it, will likely please viewers. But they'll find little of substance to take away with them once the final credits roll.

Day to focus on prayer, consecrated life

Often, Catholics look to those in consecrated life as experts in prayer. Pope Francis declared 2015 the Year of Consecrated Life. The women and men in consecrated life in the Archdiocese of Portland have invited the public to join them for a celebration 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Valley Catholic High School.

More than 200 sisters and lay associates gathered in Our Lady of Angels Chapel in Aston, Pa. for a Mass. The 27 Franciscan women represent 1,478 years of service throughout the U.S. as well as in other countries.

Disciples didn't always get it right

Q —I understand this may be a silly question to you, but I’ve always been curious about the personalities of the disciples (context being how they behaved around people), so my question is: Were any of the disciples, before and during their time with the Lord, considered social misfits? Also, did any of the disciples not get along with each other?

Archbishop Howard School to change name
Over the years it became clear that too many people didn’t associate Archbishop Howard School’s teams — or the school — with St. Rose Parish. “We’d go to CYO games and people would ask us if we were from Vancouver or Salem,” says Gina Yazzolino, development director at the school.
