July conference at UP to focus on joy
The 35th annual Summer Conference, this year called “Where There is Darkness, Light: The Everyday Practice of Joy,” will be held at the University of Portland July 26-30. The conference aims to provide clergy, religious and lay people of all ages the chance to grow in faith through study, prayer, art and play in a group setting.

'Blackwood Crossing' a top choice for a spiritually rich video game

NEW YORK (CNS) — When you hear that a video game is about death, certain awful images quickly come to mind: stolen "Grand Theft Auto" cars being wrecked; a first-person shooter dispatching the enemy; ultraviolent war-themed titles. "Blackwood Crossing" (PaperSeven) is about mortality, but it has none of the usual crunching tropes that subject matter might at first suggest. Rather, this immersive, strange yet beautiful game is about how two young orphans deal with the demise of their parents.

'American Epic' chronicles American roots in music
NEW YORK (CNS) — Robert Redford narrates director Bernard MacMahon's exceptional documentary "American Epic," a chronicle of the lasting impact of American roots-music recordings made in the 1920s.

The series, which premiered on PBS stations Tuesday, May 16, continues Tuesday, May 23, 9 p.m.-10 p.m. PDT and concludes Tuesday, May 30, 9 p.m.-10:30 p.m. PDT.

Bios of the two newly ordained deacons 

Two men were ordained deacons on the path to priesthood in a rite May 20 at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland. 

Archbishop Alexander Sample ordained Brent Crowe of the Archdiocese of Portland and Santiago Feu of the St. John Society to a life of service. Both hope to be ordained priests next year.

Farewell to 51 at Blanchet
SALEM — The class of 2017 from Blanchet Catholic School counts 51 members. A baccalaureate is set for 7 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the school. Graduation takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, also at the school.

Memorial Day Mass to be held in Scappoose
St. Wenceslaus Parish, 51555 Old Portland Rd. in Scappoose, hosts an annual Memorial Day service and lunch Monday, May 29. The ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. with massing of the colors, flag folding, a three-volley salute and taps, followed by the rosary for deceased service members and veterans. A memorial Mass for service members and veterans begins at 11 a.m. It includes a soldier’s cross made of rifle, boots and helmet. Then comes noon luncheon with the missing service member ceremony and a toast. All are invited to the event, sponsored by Catholic War Veterans of Oregon.

St. Mary’s Academy will celebrate the graduation of 190 students at noon Saturday, June 3, at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center. Valedictorian is Lucy Cummins and salutatorians are Helen Buck and Maggie Rohling.
