Northwest Catholic Counseling 2016

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis' recent insistence on "walking ecumenism," the notion that Christians will draw closer to each other as they work together to help the poor, should resonate well with Lutherans and Catholics in Sweden.

'A man among boys'

On Oct. 9, 1947, the Catholic Sentinel reported on a parochial school gridiron clash, with St. Rose “hatching touchdowns in clusters” to defeat cross-town rival Cathedral 26-0.

Among the list of boys who were “impressive for the victors” was a lanky Bobby Altenhofen, who at 6-foot-3 stood above most fellow eighth graders.

'A great sense of peace'
ROME —  Being here in Rome for the General Congregation of the Society of Jesus is something I never imagined I would experience in my lifetime. In the nearly 500 years since the founding of the Jesuits in 1540, we have only had this kind of meeting of all provincials and other elected delegates 35 times. Our main purpose at this 36th General Congregation was to elect a new superior general and also to discuss how the Society can address the signs of our times.

Family takes priority
As a church, we recognize the sovereignty nations have over their borders. But we can’t remain silent when immigration enforcement tears families apart. Some things are more sacred than bureaucracy.

Stark statistics and hopeful responses

To address the bishops of the U.S. mission dioceses on the topic "Economic Structures and Poverty," I spent a month poring over 300 pages of articles and reports, and I ended up reconnecting myself to some stark statistics and opening my eyes to some needed responses by us as a society.

Queen of Katwe
NEW YORK (CNS) — The glorious "Queen of Katwe" (Disney) applies the traditional formula of an uplifting sports drama to the real-life story of a Ugandan chess prodigy.

Auschwitz saint's story comes to Woodburn
St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan monk, could easily have survived World War II. The Nazis even offered him the chance to register as an ethnic German, giving him status far above his fellow Poles. He refused their offer, and instead helped publish anti-Nazi magazines, also giving shelter to Jewish refugees.

Students raise prayers, funds for children with cancer

It was a fitting weather combination for a day that acknowledged both heartbreak and joy. After raining all morning, the drops let up as soggy but smiley students wound their way down a muddy incline and gathered with an estimated 400 peers for Mass.

“Today is about amazing kids who get out of bed on a rainy day … to make the world just a little bit better for the kids who can’t get out of bed,” Regina Ellis told the teens. Ellis founded the Children’s Cancer Association more than 20 years ago after losing her 5-year-old daughter, Alexandra, to the disease.

A hall of welcome
MILWAUKIE — Cranes swung through a cloudless sky on a recent morning at Christ the King Parish. A crew carried slabs of wood and rope, working in the sunshine on a new parish center. The structure, costing just over $3 million, will include a kitchen, cafeteria event and storage space, and a “fireside room,” a peaceful gathering or meeting spot, said Chris George, principal of Christ the King.
