OMAHA, Neb. — A Maryland Catholic doctor who contracted the Ebola virus while working at a Methodist hospital in the West African nation of Sierra Leone died early Nov. 17 at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha from the virus.

A tale of two synods

At our recent meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore, Md., the bishops from the United States who participated in the recent Extraordinary Synod on the pastoral challenges of the family reported on their experiences. One of them, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, spoke of a “tale of two synods.” By this he meant that the synod as reported and covered by much of the media did not match his own experience at the synod. He jokingly stated that he must have been at the wrong synod!

In a very short time, most of us become “evaluation-wise.” We learn what our employers are seeking and we become adept at responding to their questions. We learn our employer’s values and the criteria by which we will be measured. It should be especially easy if one works in ministry.

The loft at St. Anthony Church in Forest Grove was remodeled recently to accommodate parish musicians. In addition to structural upgrades, the sound system was upgraded.
