At Mariachi Mass on Portland waterfront, worshippers called to serve selflessly

Oregon may be home to both English- and Spanish-speakers, but now it’s time for everyone to speak a common language of selfless love and service.

That was the message May 7 as Archbishop John Vlazny presided at the annual Mariachi Mass on Portland’s waterfront during the Cinco de Mayo festival. The retired leader of the Archdiocese of Portland is a fluent Spanish speaker and a well-known face at Portland’s Cinco de Mayo, which for 33 years has celebrated Mexican culture and Latino life — including the Catholic faith.

SALEM — A Catholic inmate on Oregon’s death row was transferred to the general prison population in January. A lay Catholic minister at Oregon State Penitentiary says Greg Bowen has been joining other inmates for Mass, something he could not do while he was isolated as a candidate for execution.

Tips for parents

On the blog New Liturgical Movement, Peter Kwasniewski lamented what he termed “spiritual illiteracy” among many Catholics. Who can argue? I think most Catholics, myself included, feel they have an inadequate knowledge of the faith.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
NEW YORK (CNS) — For better or worse, bathroom-themed gags have long been a staple of kids' movies. But the family road comedy "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" (Fox) carries this trend to excess.

Baywatch

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Eye candy and escapism were the draw of the television series from which director Seth Gordon's action comedy "Baywatch" (Paramount) has been adapted.

Whatever success the show -- which began on NBC but had a longer life in syndication -- may have had back in the 1990s, it takes more than an ensemble of good-looking people running around in bathing suits to sustain a feature film.

Alien: Covenant
NEW YORK (CNS) — Once you've seen one vicious extraterrestrial gnaw its way out of a human body from the inside, you've seen 'em all. Or so at least the jaded — or squeamish — moviegoer might be tempted to think.

And yet, the success of the durable "Alien" franchise, which dates all the way back to 1979, and was last added to by the 2012 reboot "Prometheus," would seem to argue otherwise.
