WASHINGTON — In a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court June 26 said a Lutheran preschool should not be excluded from a state grant program to refurbish its playground surface just because it is a religious entity.

WASHINGTON — The chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Migration said the country's Catholic bishops are "deeply concerned" about the consequences of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow a partial ban on foreign nationals as it reviews the constitutionality of a wider ban.

Are we (really) listening?
I always hope to have a real-world example to go along with the subject I write about in this column. As I type this, I am alternating between the need to laugh and the temptation to cry (or, at least, furl my brow and shake my head).

Calling God our Father
Our last 11 grandchildren in a row have been girls, so I've gotten careful about asserting claims of male prerogative. But this Father's Day got me thinking about how we talk to God. Pope Francis recently reminded us, in one of his general audiences, that "when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he taught them to call God Our Father."

Looking up and raising up

After the rain, I checked my garden and found everything I planted had jumped up significantly. Not only did I jump with joy, but I took a second look at the word "up" to learn why it often connotes delight.

The Lovers
NEW YORK (CNS) — To the extent that a thoughtful drama about marital infidelity can be considered lyrical, "The Lovers" (A24) achieves that. Writer-director Azazel Jacobs carefully structures his plot to minimize any gaping holes in logic. But he also downplays the extensive collateral damage adultery inflicts.

Movies with Catholic themes to hit cinemas, video
WASHINGTON (CNS) — New movies are in the works with distinctively Catholic themes.

A documentary featuring the pope, "Pope Francis — A Man of His Word," was bought by Focus Features for later theatrical release. And a dramatization of the Marian apparitions at Fatima, Portugal, starring American actor Harvey Keitel was announced May 18 by Arclight Pictures, at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Transformers: The Last Knight
NEW YORK (CNS) — Grown-ups who yearn to connect with their inner 11-year-old boy are given a two-and-a-half-hour window of opportunity to do so in "Transformers: The Last Knight" (Paramount). As for the literal preteens who might somehow enjoy this long, loud and dumb production, however, a steady stream of swearing and some muddled supernatural motifs make it inappropriate for them.

Retiring Veneta pastor tied to Blessed Fr. Solanus Casey
VENETA — Nearly 40 years after his priestly ordination, Father Michael Morrissey will be retiring from archdiocesan work at the end of June. He served as pastor at St. Catherine of Siena Parish here for the past decade.

Father Morrissey, once a Capuchin himself, has a close connection to the newly Blessed Capuchin Father Solanus Casey. Father Morrissey attended two high school seminaries operated by American Capuchins in Detroit and New York. He still recalls hearing stories about Father Casey from his high school German teacher, who used to live with the famous Detroit priest.
