Florida chaplain to speak out against death penalty in Oregon
“The death penalty’s continued existence in the U.S. is inextricably tied to mistaken notions that God demands it,” Dale Recinella says. He calls those notions “flawed applications of Divine Revelation” similar to past justifications for slavery.

Springfield shoppers show generosity
SPRINGFIELD — During their annual “Independence from Hunger Campaign,” the Springfield Grocery Outlet collected more than $5,000 worth of groceries and more than $2,000 in cash that was given to Catholic Community Services’ Springfield Community Service Center. The store was sixth in the nation for results among the national chain of Grocery Outlets, which are independently owned.

Not locked
When the Catholic Sentinel mentioned “locked borders” in its early October editorial, I wondered on what planet were these so-called locked borders.

Media Notebook: St. Francis on film
NEW YORK (CNS) — Among the many hundreds of canonized saints recognized by the Catholic Church, few if any enjoy the popularity of Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, the man better known as St. Francis of Assisi. His intriguing life and enduring fame  won him the attention of Hollywood.

Brooklyn: a quieter story about the Irish
In the film "Brooklyn" (Fox Searchlight), set during the early 1950s, Eilis Lacey has relatively little to complain about. Her journey out of Ireland and reception in America go about as smoothly as can be imagined. In part because of the time period — decades after the main waves of European immigration and catalysts such as the Great Famine — her material circumstances on either side of the Atlantic are far from dire.

What the Synod was . . . and was not
I have followed with no little concern the coverage of the recent Synod on marriage and the family in the media, especially in the secular media. If one did not know better, we might have thought that we were in the middle of an ecumenical council of the Church, a sort of Vatican III. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Change helps fill church for Veterans Day Mass
Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus (who focus on patriotism) in the Eugene area, have long organized a Veterans Day Mass at St. Mary’s. They decided this year that they would invite not only veterans but also police, fire personnel, rescue volunteers and professionals, and emergency responders to the “Red, White and Blue Mass” on Veterans Day.

"Healing relationships" program for parishes
Matt Cato, director of the Office of Life, Justice and Peace, knows the exact day that he and Benedictine Brother Cyril of Mount Angel decided to create a study guide for use in parishes for Pope Francis’ encyclical. “We were doing an interview on KBVM radio and Brother Cyril brought up what would we do to promote the encyclical,” he remembers.
