Priest and his father hit the road for vocations
Father Jeff Eirvin, director of vocations for the Archdiocese of Portland, and his father, Jeff Eirvin Sr., walked nearly 150 miles in Portugal and Spain. The 10-day walk, which ended in early July, was a prayerful journey to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, one of the world’s foremost Christian pilgrimage sites. The father and son team prayed for an increase in vocations to priesthood and religious life.

Work in the world: A day in the life of a modern sister
After walking into the Portland State University Newman Center house, Sister Teresa Harrell immediately goes to the adoration chapel to say hello to Jesus. Her housemate, visiting priests and some students follow suit.

Communication is important in Sister Harrell’s relationship with God. That’s one of the reasons she attends Mass daily. Not going would be like going a day without talking to a spouse, she says.

Ascending and descending at Ascension Parish
Church life has its ups and downs. It turns out that’s a good thing at Ascension Parish in Southeast Portland.

Parishioners gathered after Mass July 9 to bless a new elevator that will carry parishioners between the church and the basement social hall. As Father David Jaspers put it, with a play on the parish name, the community will ascend and descend.

About 600 people gathered this spring to celebrate 25 years of Hispanic ministry at St. Andrew Parish in Northeast Portland. At a bilingual Mass, Father David Zegar, pastor, sounded themes of love, unity and cooperation.

Parish celebrates freedom, attracts many visitors
For the past 41 years, the Vietnamese community has come together on the weekend before July Fourth to celebrate and give thanks for God’s gifts.

Many out-of-town families made the annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of Lavang Parish in Northeast Portland, a tradition that started with their loved ones many years ago.
