Hope amid fear: Ministries reach out to faithful divorced

Fear and loneliness. These are emotions commonly felt by Catholics going through a divorce.

There’s fear of judgement. There’s fear of the change that the death of a marriage brings. There’s the accompanying loneliness. And, there’s the assumption that the change has to be endured without support from a church community.

Aquinas likely influenced Declaration of Independence
Since the Sentinel’s editorial (July 1, page 19) mentioned the wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas, and I happened to be reading a summary of his most famous writings, I think Catholics should know how he affected the writing of the Declaration of Independence 500 years later.

The Accountant
NEW YORK (CNS) — In effect, the action-drama "The Accountant" (Warner Bros.) argues that those with autism have a license to kill as well as to abet a litany of other criminal activities.

If this summation makes the movie sound preposterous and morally bankrupt, then so be it. After doing the math, it's the only deduction one can draw.

NEW YORK (CNS) — An overheated tone and characters' questionable tactics in the struggle against abortion undercut the obviously good intentions behind the pro-life drama "Voiceless" (ArtAffects).

While it's clearly meant to serve as a cinematic rallying cry for the protection of the innocent, the film instead runs the risk of reinforcing the stereotype of irate, crusading picketers collaring women in vulnerable situations.

Kevin Hart: What Now?

NEW YORK (CNS) — Everything about the concert film "Kevin Hart: What Now?" (Universal) — aside from the comic himself — is oversized.

That includes the rock-concert setting at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and the giant video screens used to illustrate his stories. It also applies to Hart's many attempts to make fun of his own life, in which he now confronts mostly rich-people problems.

The Church must be ready and willing, as Pope Francis has exhorted us, to accompany people on their spiritual journey. But the Church must always remain faithful to her mission and to her Savior in proposing the path that leads to true happiness, holiness, peace and joy.

Students raise prayers, funds for children with cancer

It was a fitting weather combination for a day that acknowledged both heartbreak and joy. After raining all morning, the drops let up as soggy but smiley students wound their way down a muddy incline and gathered with an estimated 400 peers for Mass.

“Today is about amazing kids who get out of bed on a rainy day … to make the world just a little bit better for the kids who can’t get out of bed,” Regina Ellis told the teens. Ellis founded the Children’s Cancer Association more than 20 years ago after losing her 5-year-old daughter, Alexandra, to the disease.
