Anthony John Arjavac died Dec. 4. He was 95.
Mr. Arjavac was born Feb. 2, 1917, Aurora, Minn., to Ignatz and Anna Arjavac. He grew up in Gilbert, Minn., and attended Gilbert High School. After graduation, he moved to Oregon City to help out with a cousin's berry farm and stayed in the Portland area for the remainder of his adult life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and married Elizabeth Caterina when in 1945. He graduated from the University of Portland with degrees in teaching, earning a bachelor's degree in 1949 and a master's degree in 1954. After graduation, he worked as teacher for Portland Public Schools until his retirement. During the summer months, he also worked as a lifeguard for the Portland Public Parks Bureau.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his stepmother, Maude Arjavac; son, Paul Arjavac; and brothers, Edward and Jack Arjavac. He is survived by his wife, Marietta; son, Charles Arjavac; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Schwartz; one grandson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A rosary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Christ the King Church in Milwaukie, followed by a reception.
