Hailed Renaissance funeral music offered
Maria of Spain
Maria of Spain

Hear music from the 1603 funeral Mass of Maria of Spain, Holy Roman Empress. The Ensemble, led by artistic director Patrick McDonough, sings Tomás Luis de Victoria's Officium Defunctorum at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 at St. Stephen Church in Southeast Portland. The Officium Defunctorum was an ode to the powerful woman, a staunch Catholic who at times led Spain during the height of its power. She was the sister of the Spanish king and Holy Roman Emperor Philip II.

The music, written for six parts, has long enjoyed a reputation as Victoria’s supreme accomplishment. It alternates between chant and polyphony. Cost is $20 general, $15 for students and seniors. Tickets available at the door or at theEnsemble.org.
