ST. BENEDICT — The 2013 Mount Angel Seminary academic year ended with a joyous baccalaureate Mass and graduation exercises last month.
The graduation commenced on a beautiful Saturday morning with the ringing of the abbey bells and a colorful procession into the abbey church. Deacon Owen Cummings, academic vice president and master of ceremonies, gave the invocation. Msgr. Patrick Brennan, president-rector of the seminary from 1990 to 2000, spoke to the seminarians about their launch into the Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI. Inherent in the call to renewal is the call to “preach the uniqueness of our Catholic faith and to attract others,” Msgr. Brennan said.
For the new evangelization, priests can contribute joy, humor and laughter in the spiritual life. Quoting St. Francis de Sales, Msgr. Brennan told the seminarians: "'A spoonful of honey attracts more flies than a barrelful of vinegar.’ A spoonful of honey, so much a part of our tradition, that can bring joy, humor and laughter to a church.”
He told graduates to "remember the beauty of your Catholic faith, live it each day, and preach it to those who hunger for our way of life. Be confident in the gift you offer, and bestow it generously: the Catholic imagination, the common good, the life — giving qualities of joy, humor and laughter. Lead people out of the desert, to a place of life — to the Catholic Church, our mater et magister, our home.”
The graduates included: 10 new Bachelors of Arts, 13 Masters of Divinity, seven Master of Arts, and one recipient of the Pontifical Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology. Four graduates will be ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Portland on June 7: Rev. Mr. Aniceto Guiriba, Rev. Mr. James Herrera, Rev. Mr. John Marshall and Rev. Mr. Chrispine Otieno.
Rev. Mr. Joe Fleming of the Diocese of Helena delivered the senior farewell. Msgr. Joseph Betschart concluded with the president’s remarks and Abbot Gregory Duerr, chancellor, bestowed his final blessing upon the graduates.
