In the fall of 1963, Jesuit Father Ed McTighe began his residence and ministry at Jesuit High School in Southwest Portland. At the start of April, Father McTighe will move on, continuing his life in retirement at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, Calif.

Father McTighe will celebrate his final Mass at Jesuit at 8:35 a.m. on Friday, March 22, in the Smith Gym on campus.

Father McTighe arrived at Jesuit High during the school’s infancy and had a hand in the institution’s maturation. During his 20 years teaching religion and English, he was also in charge of the grounds and planted all of the trees along Mary’s Way and the South Wing, which are his pride and joy. In addition, Father McTighe was director of Jesuit’s Boy’s Glee Club from 1963 until 1975.

Since his retirement from 18 years as a chaplain at Providence St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2003, Father McTighe has continued his residence at Jesuit, where he has been a substitute teacher, has sung with the student liturgy band, and has played the electric piano at weekly school liturgies.

“What a delight to keep young around our young people,” says Father McTighe. “They’re very special.”

Father McTighe also celebrates weekday Masses in the Canisius Chapel at 7:15 a.m., often playing the organ, and helps out at various parishes in California and Oregon.
“One of the most impressive things about Father Ed McTighe is his effort to do priestly work at both St. Pius and Arch Cape and other churches when he is asked to fill in,” says Jesuit Father Bill Hayes, former president of Jesuit High. “He does this despite his physical limitations. Ed always has a smile for everyone.”

Father J.K. Adams, superior of the Jesuit community in residence at the school, says Father McTighe has shown great generosity over the years. "His joyful and prayerful presence on our campus and in our community is going to be deeply missed," Father Adams says.
