WALDPORT — Maria Alvarado, a parishioner at St. Anthony Church, has been chosen to attend the 2013 United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth this summer.
Maria, a junior at Waldport High school, is editor of the school yearbook and a member of the soccer and basketball teams. The Lincoln City Odd Fellows selected Maria after she submitted a winning essay about the UN’s role in protecting the health and welfare of children and participated in a speech competition.
The UN Pilgrimage was established by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs in 1949. Approximately 300 students earn a place on the trip each year. The 10-day adventure will include visits to New York City, Philadelphia, Pa., Washington, D.C., and Ottawa, Canada. Students participate in discussions concerning United Nations efforts in education, politics and religion. They will visit UN headquarters and experience briefings by UN agencies and departments.
