Parents unveil new sign at Montessori school in Northeast Portland.
Portland’s first and oldest Montessori school has a new name. As of Jan. 1, Providence Montessori School became The Portland Montessori School, and became an independent nonprofit.
Providence Montessori School was founded 50 years ago by Providence Sister Francella LaFramboise, who studied at Montessori institutes in the United States and Europe. The school offers primary and elementary programs. It has been operated by Providence Health & Services, but now transitions to an independent, nonprofit status.
To mark the school’s 50th year of service and recognize its new status and name, parents and community members attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony and unveiling of the school’s new sign on Jan. 2. On the chilly afternoon, students sold hot drinks to raise money for Mercy Corps and gave musical performances.
