EUGENE — The Marist Catholic High School Ecology class has partnered with the city of Eugene and the University of Oregon Environmental Leadership Program to monitor pond turtle populations in the city's Delta Ponds.
Following the protocol developed by the program, the 19-student class makes a weekly journey to various sites around the ponds, counting the numbers of native Western pond turtles and invasive red-eared sliders. The goal of the study is to determine the effects of the recent work by the city and the Army Corps of Engineers to reconnect the ponds to the Willamette River, creating a more natural habitat for the Western pond turtles and other wildlife.
