CENTRAL POINT — For more than three decades, Mass here has been held in a building that was once a fruit stand.

Now that fruit stand is gone. Shepherd of the Valley Church tore down the old building, which had been extended several times as the rural parish grew. A new building that will accommodate a larger congregation is slated to be finished in 2013.

“At first, we only had overcrowding during the big feast days,” said Father Mike Walker, pastor. “Then we had people standing in the church and even outside the windows during our late morning Sunday service and our Saturday evening Spanish Mass. We had to move those services to the church hall to accommodate everyone. Three years ago, all the Masses had to move to the hall.”

Parishioners contributed far more than fundraising consultants projected, ultimately donating $2.5 million. The parish is $250,000 short of the projected cost of the project, so they are in the midst of a final push to make up the difference.

Before the church was torn down, Father Walker planned a goodbye blessings after each service.

“It is remarkable that we have gotten the years of use that we did and the blessing acknowledges he many gifts and graces that God has brought our way in these church walls,” Father Walker wrote in a blog he uses to keep parishioners updated on the project.
