Spring sports: Catholic schools claim track, tennis, golf titles

Catholic schools made it far into the prep spring sports playoffs, with some bringing home titles.

In track and field, the men of Jesuit took the 6A team crown, only their second and the first since 2006. Competition was held at legendary Hayward Field in Eugene. The Jesuit boys 4x400 team won their showcase event most of the way, capping off a set of steady performances over two days of competition.

In 5A boys track and field, Marist came in second. Among 3A women, Valley Catholic placed second.  

Among those won won individual events is Hadley Wilhoite, a Jesuit freshman who won the girls triple jump. Liam Henshaw of Marist is champion in both 5A pole vault and long jump. Paige Rice of St. Mary's Academy repeated in the 1500 meters.

In the 3A meet, Valley Catholic's girls won the 4x400 meter relay and placed second overall. Among the boys, Cooper Roach of Valley Catholic is champ in the 800 meters and the 1500 meters.

Catholic schools sent many players into the state tennis championships. Jesuit claimed the 6A boys crown and took second in the girls division, while in 5A Marist's boys tied for first with Crescent Valley and the girls tied for second, also with Crescent Valley.

In 6A girls singles tennis, it was an all-Jesuit final, with junior Erin Larner defeating freshman Bless Waldram. In 6A girls doubles, the Jesuit team of Darby Rosette and Sarah Murphy placed second.

Jesuit senior Connor Leahy placed second in 6A boys singles. The freshman Jesuit team of Tommy Mulfur and Andrew Newell were runners up in boys 6A doubles.

Among 5A girls, Marist freshman Madisyn Bryant is state singles champion  
The Marist team of sophomores Austin Tyner and AJ Bartko claimed the 5A boys doubles title, while Neu Nipatasaj, a Marist senior, was runner-up in 5A boys singles.

Among 4A and smaller schools, Kaitlyn Lomartire, a Valley Catholic senior, took second in singles while the La Salle Prep pair of Alexander Hey and Stephan Malin took third in the boys division.  

La Salle Prep of Milwaukie took the 4A boys golf crown this spring, beating number two Baker by more than 60 strokes for the two-day tourney. In individual results, junior Austin Yeo, senior Paul Bundy and sophomore Eric Clemens came in third, fourth and fifth respectively.

In 3A/2A/1A, the golf title went to the boys of St. Mary's in Medford, who were ahead by more than 70 strokes by the end of the second and final day of play. St. Mary's junior Dylan Wu is state champ in the division. Valley Catholic took sixth in 3A/2A/1A and Blanchet Catholic eighth.

In 6A boys golf, Jesuit took third and Central Catholic fourth. Marist tied for fourth in 5A.

Valley Catholic's girls were second in the state finals golf tournament for schools 4A and smaller.

In 6A baseball, Jesuit and Central Catholic advanced to the second round but got stopped there. Jesuit lost 3-1 to West Salem and the Rams went down 7-5 to Lake Oswego.

In 4A, LaSalle Prep lost in the first round 7-5 to Central High of Monmouth. Valley Catholic and Blanchet Catholic each progressed to the quarterfinals of the 3A bracket, but fell hard there, Valley taken out 6-0 by eventual champion Pleasant Hill and Blanchet defeated 14-3 by Glide.

In 2A baseball, Regis fell 10-5 in the quarterfinals to Country Christian.
In 6A softball, Central Catholic cruised to the quarterfinals with two shutouts, but then the Rams were themselves blanked 10-0 by eventual title winner North Medford. Jesuit lost in the first round 5-4 to West Linn.

Blanchet Catholic pounded its way to the semi-finals of 3A softball, falling 6-3 to a Rainier team that would end up winning the title in a 9-3 game against Dayton.

In 2A softball, Regis advanced to the quarterfinals but dropped a 5-3 game to Glendale.
