Archdiocese reassigns 27 priests among Western Oregon parishes

The Archdiocese of Portland is announcing its 2013 clergy reassignments. The changes take effect July 1 unless noted otherwise. Here are the new assignments:

Fr. Kenneth Sampson
Pastor
Sacred Heart, Medford
Father Kenneth Sampson was born in 1968 in Ronan, Mont. He graduated from Ronan High School in 1986 and from Montana State University in 1990 with a degree in marketing. He worked in marketing and as an English teacher for a Japanese language company after college. He entered Mount Angel Seminary in 1998 and earned a master’s degree in theology in 2007 and a master’s of divinity degree in 2008. He was ordained June 7, 2008.
His ministry has included work at MacLaren Youth Corrections facility, Woodburn; St. Joseph Parish, Salem; St. Cecilia Parish, Beaverton; AIDS Ministry, Portland; Veteran’s Hospital, Seattle; and St. Mary Cathedral Parish, Portland. He has also spent time as a Boy Scout chaplain, and served at Mount St. Joseph, San Jose, Calif.

Fr. James Coleman
Pastor
St. Luke, Woodburn
Father James Coleman was born in 1946, in Salem. He graduated from Mount Angel Seminary High School in 1964 and Mount Angel Seminary in 1968. He attended seminary at Canisianum, Innsbruck, Austria, and post graduate work at the University of Innsbruck, also in Austria. He was ordained June 23, 1973.
He has served in parishes all over Oregon, including St. James Parish, McMinnville; St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Portland; St. Mary Parish, Eugene; St. Joseph Parish, Salem and Sacred Heart Parish, Medford.
He has also done missionary work abroad in Latin America for the Society of St. James. His most recent assignment was administrator at St. John Parish, Yamhill. He also serves as Vicar for Hispanic Ministry for the Archdiocese of Portland.

Fr. Kelly Vandehey

and Moderator for St. Michael, Grand Ronde and Good Shepherd, Sheridan
Father Kelly Vandehey was born May 16, 1963, and raised in the Roy/Banks area of Washington County. He graduated from Banks High School in 1981.
He attended Portland Community College and the University of Portland before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in theology from Mount Angel Seminary in 1990. He completed a master’s degree in theology at Mount Angel in 1993. He was ordained July 12, 1996.
His ministry has included work at Sacred Heart Parish, Medford; St. Mary Cathedral Parish, Portland; and St. Charles Parish, Portland. He also served as the director of vocations for the archdiocese.

Fr. Terry O’Connell

St. Juan Diego, Portland
Father Terry O’Connell was born in 1954 in Minot, N.D. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Oregon and a master of divinity at Mount Angel Seminary. He was ordained Sept. 5, 1992 at St. Mary Cathedral, Portland.
He has served at St. Anne Parish, Gresham; Sacred Heart Parish, Medford; as a missionary at Mision Santo Nino de Atocha; as military chaplain on leave from the archdiocese in Guantanamo, Cuba; pastor at St. Monica, Coos Bay; and his most recent assignment as pastor of St. James Parish, McMinnville.

Fr. Vincent Kelber, OP

Holy Rosary, Portland
Dominican Father Kelber was born Nov. 10, 1977, in Whittier, Calif. He was ordained in 2007, at St. Dominic Priory in San Francisco. He served as a parochial vicar in Anchorage, Alaska.
His most recent assignment was as parochial vicar at Holy Rosary Parish, Portland.

Fr. Stephen Maria Lopez, OP

Holy Rosary, Portland
Fr. Lopez was born. Oct 24, 1971 in Brooklyn N.Y. He was ordained in 2010 at St. Dominic Priory, San Francisco.
He served as parochial vicar at St. Dominic Priory then served as prior for Holy Rosary Priory until this most recent assignment.

Fr. Henry Guillen-Vega

Father Henry Guillen-Vega was born in Masaya, Nicaragua. He attended elementary school and high school in Masaya, graduating in 1994. He then attended the Universidad Catolica Redemptoris Mater‚ graduating with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2002. He attended Mount Angel Seminary and graduated with a master of divinity degree. He was ordained at St. Mary Cathedral, June 5, 2010.
Father Guillen-Vega has worked at St. Mary Parish, Mount Angel; St. Philip Benizi Parish, Oregon City; Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami; St. Alexander Parish, Cornelius; St. Anne Parish, Gresham; Sacred Heart Parish, Gervais; Sacred Heart Parish, Medford; St. Joseph Parish, Salem; and Immaculate Conception Parish, Stayton.

Fr. James Graham

Fr. James Graham is currently administrator at Holy Name in Coquille. In addition to this assignment he will become administrator of Holy Redeemer, North Bend.
Father Graham was born in Boise, Idaho, in 1948. He graduated from Oregon City High School in 1966. He served in the Navy and worked for the Ford Motor Co. He attended Vanguard University earning a bachelor’s degree in religion-pastoral ministry in 1983. He then studied at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif. He also worked for the Oregon Department of Human Services, Adult and Family Services. He entered Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis., fall of 2007. He earned a master of divinity degree at Sacred Heart in 2012. He was ordained June 9, 2012, at St. Mary Cathedral.
His ministry has included work at Our Lady of the Lake, Lake Oswego; St. John the Apostle, Oregon City; Church of the Gesu, Milwaukee, Wis.; St. Camillus Assisted Living/Skilled Nursing, Wauwatosa, Wis.; St. Stephen, Portland and Holy Apostles, New Berlin, Wis.

Fr. Paul Materu, ALCP

St. Mary, Shaw
Apostolic Life Father Materu was born Sept. 11, 1962. He was ordained in 1998 for the Apostolic Life Community of Priests in the Opus Spiritus Sancti. He served as Novice Master at Bernhard Bendel Formation House in Moshi, Tanzania and he served in the Diocese of Boise for seven years before being called back to Tanzania. His previous assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Anthony, Tigard.

Fr. John Tran, SDD

St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Astoria
Domus Dei Father John Tran was born April 4, 1972 in Viet Nam. He was ordained in 2007 at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.
He has served in Switzerland; Panama City, Fla., and Alabama.
He became parochial vicar at St. James Parish, McMinnville in 2009.

Fr. Moises Kumul Mac

Father J. Moises Kumul Mac was born in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico in 1979. He graduated from the Colegio St. Ignatius of Loyola in Playa Del Carmen in 1999. He attended Universidad Intercontinental Sur, earning a licentiate degree in Spanish classical literature and philosophy in 2004. He next attended the Franciscan University of Cristobal Colon in Veracruz, Puerto City, Veracruz, Mexico, earning an administrative licentiate degree in educational psychology in 2006. He completed a master’s degree in theology and a master of divinity degree at Mount Angel Seminary in 2012. He was ordained in June 9, 2012 at St. Mary Cathedral.
His ministry has included work at St. Juan Diego Parish, Portland; St. Luke Hospital, Boise; Providence Health Care Center, Mount Angel; Risen Christ Parish, Boise; Our Lady of the Valley Parish, Caldwell, Idaho; St. Edward Parish, North Plains; and St. Alexander Parish, Cornelius.

Fr. Jeffrey Eirvin

Father Eirvin was born in St. Louis, Mo., in 1978. He attended elementary school in Valley Park, Mo., and graduated from John F. Kennedy Catholic High School, Manchester, Mo., in 1996. He attended Missouri State University and then Oregon State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in graphic design in 2001. He worked as a graphic designer before entering Mount Angel Seminary in 2005 where he earned a certificate in philosophy in 2007. He attended the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas and earned a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology in 2010. He was ordained by at St. Mary Cathedral, June 9, 2012.
His ministry has included work at St. Alexander, Cornelius; Holy Trinity, Beaverton; Queen of Peace, Salem; St. Patrick, Canby; St. Mary’s University, Rome; St. Mary’s Cathedral, Portland; St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.; Santa Susana, Rome; and St. Pius X Parish, Portland. For the past year he was in Rome studying at North American College.

Fr. Matt Libra

Father Libra was born in 1980 in Klamath Falls. He graduated from East Linn Christian Academy in Lebanon in 1998. St. Edward, Lebanon, is his home parish.
He worked in youth ministry at parishes in Lebanon and Salem and for Reach Youth Ministry of Yakima.
He entered Mount Angel Seminary in 2004, and earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2007. He studied in Rome at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, earning a Sacred Theology bachelor’s degree in 2010. He studied at the Pontifical Institute of John Paul II for Studies on Marriage and Family in Vatican City. He was ordained at St. Mary Cathedral, June 9, 2012.
His ministry has included work at Marian Estates, Sublimity; Sacred Heart Parish, Gervais; St. Mary Cathedral, Portland; Hospital San Carlo, Rome; work with the Missionaries of Charity in Rome; Navy Base, Naples, Italy; St. Paul Parish, Eugene; and St. Juan Diego Parish, Portland. For the past year he was in Rome, studying at North American College.

Fr. John Marshall

Father Marshall was born in Pendleton in 1978. He attended elementary school in Pendleton and graduated from Pendleton High School in 1996.
After attending the University of Portland, he entered Mount Angel Seminary, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2000. He worked for Umpqua Bank for four years. He was ordained at St. Mary Cathedral, June 8, 2013.
His ministry has included work at St. Paul Parish, Silverton; Hillcrest Youth Correction Institute, Salem; St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, Wash.; Our Lady of the Mountain Parish, Ashland; and The Madeleine in Northeast Portland.

Fr. Arturo Romero
Parochial Vicar
Sacred Heart, Medford
Father Romero-Bautista was born in Álamo, Veracruz, Mexico in 1979. He attended the archdiocesan seminary Rafael Guizar Valencia in Xalapa, Veracruz, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He began his studies in theology at Valencia archdiocesan seminary and later transferred to Mount Angel Seminary. He graduated with a master’s degree in divinity in May. He was ordained on June 9, 2012, at St. Mary Cathedral.
He has worked teaching music in a middle school in Álamo, Veracruz, and teaching philosophy and humanities at Benito Juárez high school in Álamo.
His ministry has included work in parishes in Veracruz, Xalapa, and Álamo, all in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. He has also had assignments at Resurrection Parish, Tualatin; St. Anthony Parish, Forest Grove; and St. Luke Parish, Woodburn.

Fr. Ricardo de Alba, MSpS

St. Luke, Woodburn
Father Ricardo Guillermo was born Feb. 10, 1950. He has been the administrator at St. Luke Parish in Woodburn since Oct. 20, 2012. He will become the parochial vicar there July 1, 2013. He resides at the Félix Rougier House of Studies in Mount Angel. He was ordained Aug. 15, 1981, for the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit in Mexico. 

Fr. Paolo Dayto

St. James, McMinnville
Father Paolo Dayto was born in 1983 in Daraga, Albay, Philippines. He attended elementary school in Legazpi Port, Legazpi City, Philippines, and secondary school in Rawis, Legazpi City, Philippines, graduating in 2000. He attended Mater Salutis College in Sipi, Daraga Albay, Philippines, earning a bachelor’s degree in classical philosophy in 2006. He entered Mount Angel Seminary and earned a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology in 2012 and a Master of Divinity degree in 2012. He was ordained June 8, 2013.
His ministry has included work at St. Paul Parish, Silverton; St. Mary Parish, Corvallis; and St. Juan Diego Parish and St. Mary Cathedral, both in Portland.

Fr. Theodore Frison

St. Anthony, Tigard
Father Frison was born May 24, 1945, in Portland. He graduated from Mount Angel Seminary in 1963. He received seminary training from St. Thomas Seminary in Kenmore, Wash.; St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind.; and Mount Angel. He was ordained in 1972 by Archbishop Robert Dwyer.
His ministry has included work at Central Catholic High School, Portland; St. Peter Parish, Newberg; Queen of Peace Parish, Salem; St. Mary Cathedral, Portland; St. Charles Parish, Portland; and St. Andrew Parish, Portland. He also served as chaplain at both Koinonia House at Portland State University and at MacLaren and Hillcrest youth correctional facilities. His last assignment was administrator at St. Juan Diego Parish, Portland.

Fr. Benjamin Tapia-Ortiz

Father Tapia-Ortiz was born in 1982 in Tijuana, Mexico. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Tijuana, graduating from high school in 2000. He then graduated from the Instituto Superior de Estudios Ecleciasticos, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2004. He attended Mount Angel Seminary and St. John Seminary in Camarillo, Calif. He earned master of spirituality and master of divinity degrees at St. John Seminary in May 2011. He was ordained June 9, 2012.
His ministry has included work in Bogota, Colombia; Queen of Peace Parish, Salem; Madrid, Spain, as a Jesuit Volunteer; St. Patrick Parish, Carlsbad, Calif.; Sharp Mercy Hospital, San Diego; St. John Eudes Parish, Chatsworth, Calif.; St. Anne Parish, Gresham; and most recently as parochial vicar at Sacred Heart Parish, Medford.

Fr. Mark Bentz

Father Bentz was born in 1985 in Indianapolis, Ind. He attended Lourdes Elementary School in Scio and graduated from Regis High School, Stayton, in 2004. After studying at Franciscan University of Steubenville, he entered Mount Angel Seminary, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religious studies in 2008. He next attended the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, earning a Sacred Theology Bachelor degree in theology and religious studies in 2010. He then studied at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome, and completed a Sacred Theology Licentiate degree in spiritual theology in 2013. He was ordained June 8, 2013.
His ministry has included work with the Missionaries of Charity, Ethiopia; a Spanish immersion program, Queretaro, Mexico; St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish, Astoria; and St. Joseph Parish, Salem.

Fr. Aniceto Guiriba

Father Guiriba was born in Camalig, Albay, Philippines, in 1977, and was raised there, later receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science from the Bicol University College of Arts and Sciences in Daraga, Albay, in 1998. He attended St. Gregory the Great Minor Seminary in Tabaco City and the Divine Word Mission Seminary in Quezon City, receiving a diploma in philosophy in 2005. He then studied at the Divine Word School of Theology in Tagaytay City. He entered Mount Angel Seminary in September 2010. He was ordained June 8, 2013.
His ministry work has included assignments at St. Dominic Guzman Parish in Polangui, Albay; Our Lady of the Promised Land in Quezon City; Good Shepherd Sisters Home for the Abused Young Women in Tagaytay City; at Mangyan Reservation Heritage site; Lunggani Najuan, Oriental Mindoro, and at Sacred Heart Parish, Kamunig, Quezon City — all in the Philippines. He has also worked at St. Anthony Parish, Tigard.

Fr. James Herrera

Father Herrera was born in 1977 in Stayton. He attended Linn Benton Community College before entering Mount Angel Seminary in 2005. He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religious studies in 2008 from Mount Angel Seminary. He was ordained June 8, 2013.
His ministry work has included assignments at St. Anthony Parish, Tigard; Sacred Heart Parish, Gervais; Benedictine Providence Nursing Center, Mount Angel; St. Mary Parish, Mount Angel; and St. Stephen Parish, Portland.
He participated in a year long pastoral internship at St. Anthony Parish in Forest Grove, a summer of Spanish language immersion in Guadalajara, Mexico and clinical pastoral experience training at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.

Fr. Peter Nhat Hoang

Father Nhat Hoang was born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1984. He attended elementary and high school in Portland, graduating from Grant High School in 2002. He attended Mount Angel Seminary and received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2006. He was ordained June 8, 2013.
He is currently studying at St. Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park, Calif. His ministry work has included an assignment at St. Mary Magdalene (The Madeleine) Parish, Portland.

Fr. Chrispine Otieno

St. Mary, Eugene
Father Otieno was born in Siaya County, Kenya in 1982. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Kisumu, Kenya, graduating in 1999. He attended the Consulata Institute of Philosophy, earning a diploma in philosophy and religious studies in 2005. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome in 2005. Continuing his studies at the Urbaniana University, he earned a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology in 2009. He earned a master’s degree in theology from Mount Angel Seminary in 2013. He was ordained at St. Mary Cathedral, June 8, 2013.
His ministry has included work at St. Henry, Gresham; clinical pastoral education at Good Samaritan Hospital, Tacoma, Wash.; St. Paul, Silverton; and St. Mary Parish, Corvallis.

Fr. Charles Holden

St. Joseph, Salem
Father Holden was born in New York, N.Y., in 1953. He attended elementary school at Ecole Nouvelle de la Suisse Romande in Lausanne, Switzerland. He graduated from Bishop Dagwell Hall in Portland, in 1971. He earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies in 1979 from Portland State University. He did graduate work in theology, earning a Master of Divinity degree in 2013 from Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis. 
He made a profession of faith into the Catholic Church at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Cottage Grove in 1972. He worked for Bank of America and for Tri-Met before entering the seminary. He was ordained June 8, 2013.
His ministry has included work at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Portland; Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, Maine; St. Clare Parish, Portland, and St. Paul Parish, Eugene.

Fr. Dominic Dieu Tran, SDD

Our Lady of Lavang, Portland
Domus Dei Father Dominic Dieu Tran was born April 21, 1956, in Saigon, Viet Nam. He was ordained in 2001 in Houma, La. From 2002 to 2010 he served as an associate pastor at Thanh Gia Parish in Houma-Thibodaux. From 2010 on he served as parochial vicar at St. Dominic Parish and as administrator at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Panama City, Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee.

Fr. Jacek Buda, OP

St. Thomas More and Newman Center, Eugene
Dominican Father Buda was born Sept. 15, 1969 in Rzeszów, Poland. He was Ordained in 1985 in Poland for the Dominicans. His most current assignment was associate campus minister at St. Thomas More Newman Center in Tucson. He served in Poland as an associate pastor and high school teacher/minister 1995-’98 and as provincial secretary 1998-’00.
His ministry has included work as an associate pastor in New York; at Columbia University’s Catholic Ministry as director and associate pastor at Notre Dame Parish, New York; Providence Academy, Plymouth, Minn.; and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Richmond, Va.
