On April 13, 27 teenage Boy Scouts, along with parents and counselors, gathered at Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary for the first Scout religious emblem retreat in more than 25 years. The day was organized by the Archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting and seminarians from Mount Angel.

The scouts and seminarians gathered for morning Mass and then spent the day in a variety of activities, They explored the abbey, heard the seminarians' and monks' vocation stories and went through programs to enrich their prayer life and learn church history.

“The retreat had a lot of great fun activities, but the chance to interact with the seminarians and hear their vocation stories was the best part of the day,” said Scott West, chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting.

Francisco Briguela and Tetzel Umingli, Portland seminarians, organized the day with support from faculty member Linda Showman as well as West. Sixteen other seminarians and members of the monastery served as guides and leaders at the five learning stations set up on the hilltop.

The retreat allowed each Scout to complete a part of the requirements for the Ad Altari Dei and Pope Pius XII Scout religion emblems. The Ad Altari Dei (to the altar of God) program help Catholic Scouts age 13 to 14 develop a fuller Christian way of life in the faith community. The Pope Pius XII emblem, for young men and women ages 16 to 18, focuses on vocation choices, occupations and ministries in the church as callings from God.
