Catholic Charities to take up parish collection

Catholic Charities, Catholic Community Services of Lane County and Catholic Community Services of the Mid-Willamette Valley are calling on parishioners to support their work as part of an annual campaign, which begins May 11.

The text of Hebrews 6:19, “Hope anchors the soul”, has been taken as the theme for this year’s campaign. Once a year, Catholic Charities asks parishioners to be a source of hope for those in need by making a contribution to its work. The campaign is a key source of funds and helps the organization meet the operating cost of its 25 social service programs.

The programs serve people of all ages, races and faiths. They include (among many others): school based programs to help children succeed, maternity support, adoption, immigration legal representation, food pantries, housing for young people leaving foster care, parenting classes, assistance to victims of domestic violence, help in finding employment for adults with developmental disabilities and community mental health services. “Catholic Charities is extremely grateful for the outpouring of love and generosity from each benefactor in our ministry of charity who help us bring life-affirming hope to our brothers and sisters most in need in our local communities throughout the years,” said Pietro Ferrari, executive director.

All of the money raised in the Salem and Springfield areas stays in those areas. The agency does not receive funds from the annual Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal and is a separate legal entity. Information on the campaign has been mailed to homes throughout the Archdiocese of Portland, and a special second collection will be taken in all parishes May 11-12.
