ST. BENEDICT — During the last day Pope Benedict led the Catholic Church, Mount Angel Abbey celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for his pontificate.

The Holy Father is the first pontiff to resign in almost 600 years. His announcement on Feb. 11 brought a series of mixed emotions for Catholics, including students at the seminary operated by the abbey.

“He hasn’t left yet and I already miss him,” said Leon Vigil, a seminarian for the Diocese of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

After the pope’s official announcement, the seminary carried a series of different devotions to pray for him. The Holy Father was remembered at intercessions in lauds, vespers, Mass, and rosaries.

On Feb. 28, a thanksgiving Mass was celebrated at the abbey. More than 200 faithful — including priests, monks, seminarians and laity — gathered at the celebration. Abbot Gregory Duerr presided.

During the first part of his homily, Abbot Gregory mentioned how, even though the media catalogued Benedict as “The Pope who resigned,” people shouldn’t remember him like that since his papacy was much more than just a resignation.

Before concluding, the abbot offered a prayer of thanksgiving to the Holy Father for having taught us “the cost of discipleship."

At the end of the celebration, Msgr. Joseph Betschart, president-rector of the seminary, shared a letter from Msgr. Peter Wells on behalf of the Holy Father. The letter said the pope had bestowed an apostolic blessing on the Mount Angel community.
