The Serra Club welcomed sisters for a luncheon in November.
The Portland Serra Club honored the hard work and service of religious sisters by sponsoring the annual Sisters’ Appreciation Luncheon Nov. 11.
The annual event is dedicated to Kevin Van Hoomissen, a Serran who died in 2011. Van Hoomissen loved and respected the religious sisters throughout his lifetime and he was instrumental in starting the Nuns Brunch 24 years ago.
Honoring him and the sisters at this year’s luncheon were 11 Van Hoomissen family members in attendance including his wife (and Serran) Peggy.
More than 110 sisters, Serrans and guests attended the event held at the Double Tree Lloyd Center. Orders represented were Sisters of the Holy Names leading with 16 attending, and Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in second represented by 13. The Benedictine Sisters sent eight and the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia seven.
Adorers of the Holy Cross had six on hand and the Franciscan Sisters of The Eucharist four. With two were the Sisters of St. Francis, Sisters of Reparation, Sisters of Charity, Sisters of Providence and Holy Spirit Sisters. There were two consecrated virgins and special guest Sister Lena Carvalho from Washington D.C.
Next year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 27.
