Archbishop John G. Vlazny will celebrate a Year of Faith Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7. The Mass will be the Vigil of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is the patronal feast of the Archdiocese of Portland as well as the cathedral.

Pope Benedict called for a Year of Faith to be celebrated from Oct. 11, 2012 until Christ the King Sunday, Nov. 23, 2013. Oct. 11 was chosen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.  That date was also the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church by Blessed Pope John Paul II.

Pope Benedict opened the Year of Faith with a synod on the New Evangelization held at the Vatican.  In a recent column in the Catholic Sentinel, Archbishop Vlazny noted that, “this Year of Faith challenges all of us to renew our baptismal commitment to live with faith, hope and love each and every day. All Catholics need to be strengthened in their faith by celebrating weekly Sunday Mass and, with some regularity, the sacrament of reconciliation.”

All are invited to attend.
