To the Catholic Sentinel:

I am currently working with historians of St. Vincent’s school in Salem.

We know that for many years, the Holy Names nuns kept daily journals while they taught at this school and other schools.

Those journals are preserved in Portland. Yet, delicate as these journals are, I wonder why these important journals have never been copied to microfilm or disks, where they can be viewed within the parishes they were written for?

Why can’t we make these journals available to specific priests and historians? It would also be important to save these journals to data files to provide another means of protecting them. Like all original manuscripts, these journals of the nuns are delicate. Still I think they should be shared and available to church historians.
