To the Catholic Sentinel:

I take exception with your editorial in the June 21 issue, “Give them jobs, not grief.”

You are implying that government can create jobs, but it can’t except for bureaucrats of which there are too many now.

Private enterprise creates jobs and the role of government is to get out of the way by not raising taxes and overregulating. Secondly, the liberal governments in Europe and in our country have gotten carried away with entitlement spending.

In Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain, government expenditures have risen 75 percent from 2000 to 2008. After the financial crisis hit, the spending in these countries still increased by six percent.

In our country, government spending increased by two-thirds from 2000 to 2008. Despite the supposed austerity of the last few years the federal government today is spending 16 percent more than it did at the peak of its binge spending.
