To the Catholic Sentinel:

In his 1950 encyclical Humani Generis, Pius XII affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the faith.

New findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than a hypothesis, Blessed  John Paul said in 1996.

The popes have affirmed that evolution and the universe are not in conflict with our faith.  Yet, there is a growing movement that claims that a person cannot accept the Bible and evolution.

Increasingly this has become a battleground between Christians and atheists.  Many young people lose their faith or lose interest in science as both atheists and these young-earthists claim that it is not possible to affirm the Big Bang, the age of the earth, evolution or other findings of science and maintain a Christian faith.

Young-earth, anti-evolutionists gathered in Portland on March 29. The Northwest Creation Conference asserts that our popes and scientists are wrong.  We picketed outside and celebrated all of creation, including God’s evolutionary mechanisms.
