Two St. Mary's Academy seniors were selected for the 2013 National Association for Music Education All-National Honors Choir. Soprano Samantha Schmiedeskamp and alto Georgia Tucker are the first St. Mary's students to participate in the ensemble, which brings together about 350 vocalists. They performed at a concert Oct. 30 in Nashville, Tenn., joining a jazz ensemble, concert band and symphony orchestra for a total of more than 670 students united in music.

"I am impressed with Sam and Georgia not only for their excellent musicianship and choral skills, which earned them a spot in the All-National Honors Choir, but also for their ambition and bravery to audition and travel across the country to sing with other students and a conductor they have never met before," said Kathy Briggs, St. Mary's Academy choral music director.

Earlier in 2013, Schmiedeskamp and Tucker, along with four other St. Mary's Academy students, performed with the All-Northwest Honor Choir. They were selected from more than 5,200 applicants across Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

"Music is a part of everything that I do and has always been a passion of mine," said Schmiedeskamp, 17, a Northwest Portland resident.

Both Schmiedeskamp and Tucker perform with St. Mary's Marian Singers under Briggs' leadership.

"Mrs. Briggs has been such a great resource and provided so much support," said Tucker, also 17, who lives in Southeast Portland. "The last two years of performing with fellow Marian Singers at All-State and All-Northwest have prepared me for this next step."
