Cathedral School in Northwest Portland has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2013-15 for its implementation of Apple technology. The honor also went to St. John the Baptist School in Milwaukie.

Students at Cathedral use technology daily, visiting education sites, communicating with teachers through email accounts and staying current on assignments with online textbooks. Apple technology allows teachers to offer a wide range of projects to fit the different abilities and interests of students.

Lower school teachers use technology daily to reinforce skills with math and reading games. Middle school students have done things like turn the iPad into a seismograph, dissect real organisms side-by-side with online dissections, and create iMovies to advertise roller coaster creations.

The designation is reserved for schools Apple judges are innovative, good at leadership and achieving academic excellence.

Cathedral officials say the technology has brought results.

For the 2011-'12 school year, 178 of 228 students were reading at or above grade level. The students were reassessed a year later, after implementation of Apple Technology, and the grade-level readers had increased to 198 students. During the same time period, students performing at or above grade level in math increased from 164 to 193. During the 2013 school year, 45 students more were moved from grade level to above grade level expectations.
