BEAVERTON — For the past three years I have been living overseas in Shanghai, China. I loved living there because I got to experience the culture and do many hands-on activities. The school in China was incredible.   

Moving back last Christmas, I was concerned that the new school wouldn’t live up to my expectations. Holy Trinity has eased all of my fears.

I get wonderful learning opportunities, including advanced math, labs in science, hands-on activities in social studies and an abundance of books in literature.  Not only has Holy Trinity allowed me to push myself academically, but my faith has continued to grow. Father Dave Gutmann, Brenda Martinek our principal and all the teachers have made this school a fun and welcoming environment.

Right away at Holy Trinity we were tested to determine our learning styles —oral, hands on, visual processing and the like — so that teachers could find the best way to instruct us.  All the teachers try to cover the different learning styles in some way so that everyone can succeed. In science, Mr. (Robert) Read gives us hands on labs to understand the Earth's core and plates.  Mrs. (Eileen) Kravetz, who teaches accelerated math, pushes us and makes learning fun by doing math games that reinforce our learning. Now, I find math interesting and challenging.   

At Holy Trinity my favorite thing is that it's not just about learning from a book. In the fifth grade while we were learning about the Civil War, we became real soldiers of that time. We had parades, ate food from each region and had promotions that made the whole topic more interesting and real. This year the social studies teacher, Mrs. (Donna) Kopka, did the same thing with our learning about Ancient Egypt.

The sixth and seventh grade hosted a “Night at the Museum” focused on homemade Ancient Egyptian artifacts which we had to present to the school and parents as either a character of that time or as a museum docent. The artifacts were self-chosen and created by the students, ranging from clothing, weapons, a Great Sphinx, tombs, examples of hieroglyphics and ceremonial bowls. We learned everything about Ancient Egypt's ruling Pharaohs, the geography of monuments, the writing styles, and their many gods and goddesses.  The experience researching, writing a report and verbally presenting our artifact, will stick with me for the rest of my life.
