Almost 500 families were fed with food gathered by Jesuit High School students before Christmas. Piles of goods reached 15 feet as students sorted it.

The food drive is in its 44th year and has seen a huge increase in participation over the years. In its first year, 1969, roughly 40 families benefited from the project and just a little more than $350 was raised.

The drive not only helps families during Christmas, but also provides non-perishable foods for local food banks.

"We saw many first time families signing up for food boxes this year," said Scott Powers, food drive coordinator. "The need is tremendous."

Powers says the effort also is meant to raise awareness about hunger, letting students know it's a year-round problem.

Alumni of Jesuit host their own food drive each year, this year delivering goods to more than 1,500 families and 30 local shelters.
