BANDON — Holy Trinity Church has been home to many special moments and precious memories. That’s why the decision on whether to build a new, larger church was a difficult one for Catholics here.

In February, Father Rodel Mesa, pastor, established a facility committee to decide whether Holy Trinity’s current facility lacked the necessary amenities to realize the mission and goals of the parish. During a series of community meetings, parishioners offered a many perspectives, preferences and thoughts. Additionally, the facility committee examined a variety of factors: Liturgical needs, building codes, structural concerns, funding, and archdiocesan requirements.

“After reviewing all the options and considerations before us, building a new church is the best option for us to do practically, financially and liturgically,” Father Mesa said.

Currently, the parish is in the process of picking an architect. Design, cost and dates have not yet been determined.

“We would like to build a church that is affordable yet transparent of God’s glory and in accord with the spirituality and mission of our parish,” Father Mesa said.

A fundraising campaign has already launched with the theme, “Building the Future.” The parish is asking people to “save the date” for a Sept. 13, 2014, golf tournament at Bandon Crossings Golf Course. â-Father Mesa hopes people from all over Western Oregon will look at the event as a chance to support a good cause and visit the scenic southern coast. Out-of-towners and locals will both be invited to attend a “meet and greet” Friday night, as well as a barbecue following the tournament Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, visitors will be welcomed at Mass and then served breakfast.

“We hope golfers will come here to play and have fun,” Father Mesa said.
