BEAVERTON — Sister Bernadette Ann Sohler of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon died Aug. 13. She was 84.

Mary Ann Sohler was born March 12, 1929, in North Plains.  She attended elementary school at Columbia Academy. At age 17, she entered the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. After her canonical year of novitiate, she began her ministry as a teacher and then principal for more than 30 years.  Sister Bernadette Ann moved from teaching into parish work in the mid-1980s, finding much joy in her work as parish administrator at St. Peter the Fisherman in Arch Cape.

Sister Bernadette Ann was known for her concern for the poor.  While at Arch Cape, one of her concerns was to send money and care packages to the relatives of Father Nicholas Nilema, ALCP, in Tanzania.

Sister Bernadette Ann returned to the Motherhouse in 2001.

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Vanderzanden, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Father Nilema celebrated a Mass of Christian burial Aug. 19. Memorial donations can be made to the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.
