Dominican Sister Mary Joan Doran of the Queen of Peace died May 17. She was 99.

She was born to Walter Doran and Alice Shannon in Centralia, Wash., May 2, 1915, and her family moved to Portland where she attended Immaculate Heart Elementary and Immaculata High School. She graduated from Marylhurst College in 1913, majoring in chemistry. She worked as a registered lab technician in Seattle hospitals until her entrance in the convent in 1941. After her profession in 1943 she taught elementary school in Los Angeles and in Portland as a high school science teacher.

She was assigned to the motherhouse where she worked for years in the Mater Dei Press and as a librarian. In 1979 she transitioned to the development office as an assistant. In 2006, her final transition was to St. Martin’s Residence and the ministry of prayer.

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated in Dominican Chapel in Fremont.
