TACOMA, Wash. —  Sister Martha Joseph Rooney died at the St. Anne Convent here May 2. She was 91.

Sister Martha Joseph was born in Charleville, County Cork, Ireland. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1938 and professed her first vows in 1941.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Catholic University of America in 1948 and a master’s degree in nursing education from St. Louis University in 1958.  

She served for 15 years in the Diocese of Baker working as an assistant administrator at St. Elizabeth/St. Clare Hospital in Baker (1976-‘86, 1987-‘89, 1991-‘94).

Sister Martha Joseph is survived by her niece, grandnieces, and by her Franciscan family.

All services will be held in St. Ann Convent Chapel, 6602 S. Alaska Street, in Tacoma. The vigil will be held on Thursday, May 8, at 6 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, May 9, at 11 A.M. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
