Maureen Anne "Irish" Bruers died April 18. She was 81.

Mrs. Bruers was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Worthington, Minn. She received her elementary education in Rapid City, S.D., and Newberg. She graduated from high school at St Mary’s of the Valley in 1948, and then attended University of Portland for one year. She moved to Minnesota, transferring to General Beadle State Teachers College in Madison, SD. She graduated with an associate’s degree in teaching and then graduated in 1956 from Mankato State Teachers College with a bachelor’s degree in education. She worked as a teacher in Jackson, Minn., and went on to teach for the Air Force in Japan, Germany and England, Los Angeles and San Bernardino, Calif.

She married Don Bruers in 1962. Following their marriage they resided in California, Idaho and Oregon. In 1975, they made their home in Vernonia, where they owned and operated the Pine Cone Restaurant for several years. She also worked as a substitute teacher for many years and had taught pre-school and religious education.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Don, a son; Michael; and her parents. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Kathleen and John Spinden, Vernonia; and four grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 28, at St. Mary Church in Vernonia, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Memorial donations can be made to St Vincent De Paul Society c/o St. Mary's Church, Vernonia.
