Leander Sylvester Peters, a member of Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, died Sept. 8. He was 82.

Mr. Peters was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Verboort. He attended grade school and high school at Visitation School. In 1951, he married Dorothy Braukman in South Carolina while enlisted in the U.S. Army. After returning home to the Forest Grove area, he started farming, and later worked in construction. He eventually teamed up with his brother, Kenneth, to start Peters Brothers Construction. In the 1970s, he purchased farmland in the Forest Grove and Verboort areas and returned to farming. 

He was preceded in death by two children, Paula and Jay Paul; his parents, Albert and Catherine; and siblings, Barbara, Stanley, and Frances (Tats). He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy; five daughters, Lyndel Peters, Beaverton; Renae and Dave Ooley, Forest Grove; Laura and Gerry Romjue, North Plains; Karen and Ron Ooley, Forest Grove; and Susan and Pete Lepschat, Forest Grove; 11 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and siblings, Anna Marie, Norbert, Wilfred, Bernadette, Helen, Laurence, Paul, Kenneth and Kathleen.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Visitation Church in Verboort.
