Joyce Phoebe Schwab Cowan died Jan. 29. She was 88.

Mrs. Cowan was born Nov. 5, 1924, in Craik, Saskatchewan to Paul and Phoebe (Hemingway) Kusmire. She graduated from high school in Estevan. She moved to Regina to take up a position with Saskatchewan Government Telephones. She married Harry Schwab in 1947. Ten years later they moved to the United States. She worked for Pacific Northwest Bell, where she worked her way up from telephone switchboard operator to department supervisor. She remained with PNB for 27 years, retiring in 1985. Her husband died in 1989. She married Louis Cowan in 2005. He died in 2009.

She is survived by her sister, Darlene Sinclair, Regina, Saskatchewan; children, Larry Schwab (Norma), Damascus, and Jerry Schwab (Stacey), Canberra, Australia; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Christ the King Church, preceded by a rosary at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow at the parish center. Memorial contributions can be made to Open Arms and Helping Hands (
