John Vingelen died July 24. He was 70.

Mr. Vingelen was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Grand Forks, N.D. He moved to Portland when he was 7 and attended Grout Elementary School, Cleveland High School and Portland State University. He earned a master’s degree at Lewis & Clark College. He worked as Benson High School for 33 years as a math teacher, counselor, vice principal and principal. He retired in 2002, but continued to teach as an adjunct professor at Concordia University.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Anne; children, Paula Sullivan (Joe), New York City, Erik Vingelen, Portland and Mary Beth Vingelen, New York City; and one grandson.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 1, at St. Ignatius Church. Memorial donations can be made to the Benson High School Scholarship Fund.
