Jane Hope Baumgart died Sept. 15. She was 59.

Mrs. Baumgart was born Oct. 4, 1953, in Fremont, Ohio, to John and Florence (Otermat) Waggoner. She graduated from high school in 1972 and that August began her nursing education at the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing diploma program. She graduated in 1975. She moved to Eugene, where she took a nursing position in long-term care and then at the University of Oregon Student Health Center. In 1977, she accepted a position with Sacred Heart General Hospital (now Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend). In the early 1990s, she took a position in NICU and remained a permanent staff member there until illness forced her to retire in 2012.

In 1998, she began to sew 3- by 4-foot quilts for NICU babies born before 30 weeks of gestation. Eventually she made it her mission to find a way to provide a quilt for each NICU patient. She enlisted the help of co-workers and the Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation to achieve this dream. From this came the Quilts of Hope project. More than 2,500 quilts have been given to NICU babies since she and her volunteer friends started sewing the quilts.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Jeff; and two children.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary Church in Eugene. Memorial donations can be made to the Quilts of Hope project through the Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation, PO Box 10905, Eugene OR 97440.
