Carmen Peralta Byrnes died Feb. 6. She was 85.

Mrs. Byrnes was born Aug. 14, 1927 in Barcelona, Spain to Dr. Claudio Peralta and Michaela de Callis. She escaped the Spanish Civil War with her family in 1939 to Cartago, Costa Rica, where she spent her childhood years. She attended Notre Dame College in Belmont, Calif. She married Don Byrnes. She graduated from Portland State University with degrees in art history and Spanish literature. She lived in Portland, Claremont, Calif., Santa Cruz, Calif. and Alajuela, Costa Rica. She was a museum docent and taught Spanish.

She is survived by her husband, Don; brother, Dr. Claudio Peralta (Flora de Fallas), Costa Rica; sister, Maria Rosa Wood, Sunnyvale, Calif; son, Michael (Marian); three grandchildren; a niece and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at at St Juan Diego Church.
