  • Father Buckley dies at 86

    In Portland on Aug. 15, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Dominican Father Gerald Albert Buckley died. It was 62 years to the day after he professed vows in his religious community.

    Mary Kathryn Barnes, 93, passed away on July 29, 2017 at Maryville Memory Care in Beaverton.  There will be a rosary Sunday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Loyola Retreat Center Chapel, 3220 SE 43rd Ave. in Portland. The funeral Mass will be Monday, Aug. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 3400 SE 43rd Ave. in Portland. There will be a luncheon reception immediately following the Mass in the school cafeteria.

    Apolonio Paul Quintana, a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Parish in Milwaukie, died July 17. Services are pending at a later date.

    Mary Frances O’Neill Nichols, 95, longtime parishioner of The Madeleine and St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Portland, and St. Cyril Catholic Church in Wilsonville, passed away at home with her family by her side July 28. A private memorial service will be held for the family.

    Sister Catherine Grams (Sister Mary Michaelann), 90, died at the Marie-Rose Center at Mary's Woods in Lake Oswego, July 13. A member of the Sisters of the Holy Names for 70 years, her funeral will be held Wednesday, July 26, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Names, Marylhurst.

    Shirley Randles, 93, died peacefully surrounded by family members Monday, July 3. There was a private interment ceremony at Mount Calvary and memorial Mass.

    James Michael, 78, died peacefully July 17 in Portland from causes related to a stroke he suffered in 2009. There will be a funeral Mass Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. at All Saints Church.
  • Peter Barnhart Bosserman, 83, died July 20. There will be a funeral Mass Thursday, July 27, at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Milwaukie.

    OREGON CITY — Virginia Johanna “Gin” Miller, 95, died June 28 with family present at Blessed Trinity Foster Home here. There will be a rosary Friday July 28 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Church.

    Sister Germaine Chabot, 98, a Sister of Providence for 80 years, died July 4 at St. Joseph Residence, Seattle. There will be a vigil Sunday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m., and a funeral Mass Monday, July 10, at 11 a.m., both at St. Joseph Residence, 4800 37th Avenue SW, Seattle. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Seattle, after the Mass and reception.

    Kathleen Laws, a longtime parishioner of Ascension Parish, died June 21. There was a funeral Mass at Ascension.
  • Helen Agnes Rapp, a longtime parishioner of St. Pius X, died June 10 in her Portland home.
  • Deacon Martin Bozulich, 78, died March 25 in Morristown, New Jersey, after a brave and hard-fought battle with cancer. He had recently relocated from Reedsport to be near his daughter, Jenifer, while undergoing medical treatment. Martin served the church as a deacon in Reedsport, Florence, and North Bend. There was a funeral Mass at St. John the Apostle Church in Reedsport.

    Dolores Jones, 89, died peacefully Sunday June 18 at Marquis Nursing Home in Portland.

    There will be a funeral Mass at St. John Church in Oregon City Tuesday June 27 at 11 a.m. She will be buried next to her husband at Willamette National cemetery. 

    There will also be a celebration of her life at Howell’s Restaurant in Oregon City July 2 from 3 to 6 p.m

  • Holy Names Sr. Constance Lovcik
    Sister Constance Lovcik (Sr. Constanza Marion), age 92, died at the Marie-Rose Center at Mary’s Woods in Lake Oswego on May 28. She was a vowed member of the Sisters of the Holy Names for 72 years. The Mass of Christian Burial was in the Provincial House Chapel.

    Daniel H. Niedermeyer, 88, died peacefully June 5 in Portland of natural causes. There was a funeral Mass at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

    Margaret Theresa (Emig) Stoering, known all her life as “Peggy”, died May 28.  Though funeral services will be held in California, the family has organized a special Portland-area Mass and celebration of life in the chapel of Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton June 17 at 2 p.m.

    Father John Domin, 94, died June 5. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Resurrection Parish in Tualatin with Archbishop Alexander K. Sample presiding.

    Donald Westom, 93, a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima in Portland, passed away peacefully on May 15, surrounded by his loving family. There was a funeral Mass at St. Rose.

    Rose Mary Adams Price, 73, died May 29, surrounded by her family, after a hard fought battle with esophageal cancer.
  • Larry Lynn Spurlock, 66, a parishioner at St. John the Baptist in Milwaukie, died May 24. The funeral was planned as a private one.
  • Thomas Bochsler
    STAYTON – Thomas Richard Bochsler, 77, unexpectedly died June 3. The vigil and rosary will be Thursday, June 8, at 7 p.m. and the funeral Mass will be Friday, June 9, at 11 a.m., both at Immaculate Conception Church in Stayton.

    James Robert Seats died in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 16. His ashes will be interred with his father at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland.
  • Rodger Matthies
    Rodger Fred Matthies, 68, died at home in Dallas May 1. A gathering will be scheduled later in June to celebrate Mr. Matthies’s life.

    John Francis “Jack” Whalen, 89, died May 17.  There was a funeral Mass on May 24 at his parish, St Pius X in Portland, and his graveside service was at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

    Marie E. Gustafson, 76, died May 12.  There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, at St. Cecilia Church, 5105 SW Franklin Ave., Beaverton. Recitation of the rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m.

    Thomas Joseph Moore, 92, died peacefully on May 9 surrounded by family. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 19, at St. Matthew  Church in Hillsboro preceded by a rosary at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

    Father Joseph John Beno,93, died peacefully at the Blessing House in Tigard May 6. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, May 15, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Scappoose. Burial with military honors will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held in the parish center.

    Donn Michael “Sully” Sullivan, 83, died April 29. There will be a rosary at 10 a.m. and a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, May 15, at St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 7007 SW 46th Ave., Portland.

    Betty Getman, formerly Betty Gardner, age 83, passed away in Vancouver, Washington, April 28 after a series of long illnesses. A private service is planned for summertime.

    Kathleen Louise Van Veen, 70, known to everybody as Kathy, passed away peacefully at her home in Southeast Portland April 26, 36 weeks after she was told she had an inoperable brain tumor and only eight weeks to live. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at St Ignatius Church in Southeast Portland. A catered reception will follow.
  • Mary Louise Garcia Barricks, 102, mother of Father Bob Barricks, died April 26. There will be a funeral Mass May 5, with details to come.

    Donald O’Hollearn died April 2. There was a funeral Mass at St. Ignatius Church and graveside service with military honors at Willamette National Cemetery.
  • Dorothy Kinnunen
    Dorothy Helen Kinnunen, 86, died April 3. There was a funeral Mass at Proto-Cathedral of St. James the Greater in Vancouver, Washington.
  • Robert Prentice
    Robert Theodore Prentice, 87, died March 17. There was a funeral Mass at Holy Cross Church in Portland.
  • Sr. Jerome Zerr, OSB
    Benedictine Sister Jerome (Carol) Zerr, 72, a member of Queen of Angels Monastery, died April 28, at the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. There will be a vigil at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 4,  in the monastery chapel in Mount Angel, and a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 5, followed by her burial in the monastery cemetery. There will also be a memorial Mass for Sister Jerome at 10 a.m. Monday, May 8, at the University of Portland Chiles Center.

    Benedictine Father Cosmas White, 88, a monk and priest of Mount Angel Abbey, died April 27, at the abbey in Saint Benedict. There will be a vigil at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30, and a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, May 1, both services at the Abbey church, followed by his burial in the Abbey cemetery.

    Richard Lee Rochon, 88, of Springfield, died April 17. There will be a rosary at 11 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at noon on Monday, May 8, at St. Paul Church in Eugene.

    Holy Names Sister Patricia Baxter (Sister Mary Emmetria), 90, died at the Marie-Rose Center at Mary’s Woods in Lake Oswego March 24. She was a vowed member of the Sisters of the Holy Names for 69 years. There was a funeral Mass in the Provincial House Chapel.

    NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Holy Cross Father Charles David Sherrer, 81, died April 13, at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, following a brief illness. There was a funeral Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus.

    Patricia “Patsy” Barbara Porter, 99, of Portland, died April 11 surrounded by family. There will be a rosary at 10 a.m. and a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 21, at St. John the Apostle Church, 417 Washington St., Oregon City.

    YACHATS - Jocille Daniel, 80, died in Salem after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loved ones. There will be a rosary at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, at St. Joseph Church in Salem.

    Frances “Fran” Elaine Keller (Fran), devoted wife and mother, passed away peacefully March 25 at her home in Milwaukie after a short battle with cancer.  There was a funeral Mass at St. Agatha Church.

    Lloyd “Jack” Bruce, 89, died March 26. There will be a rosary at 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at St. John the Baptist Church in Milwaukie.

    Theresa “Teddy” Ruiz Seaton passed away March 30 at the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center in Mount Angel. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6, at St. Luke Church, 417 Harrison St. in Woodburn.

    Beaverton — Sister of St. Mary of Oregon Veronica Marie Templer died March 31 at the Maryville skilled nursing care facility, located on the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon campus. There will be a funeral Mass at 4 p.m. April 5 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel in the SSMO Motherhouse. The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon campus is located on Murray Blvd. at TV Highway in Beaverton.
  • Maryellen Smith, 73, of Yamhill, died Jan. 5 of natural causes at home.

    Mrs. Smith was born in Saginaw, Michigan, Feb. 14, 1943, the daughter of Henry Richard and Geraldine Garrett of Burton, Michigan. Maryellen married Norman Smith May 4, 1963.

  • Robert G. Stochosky, 89, died peacefully Friday, March 3, 2017 after a brief illness. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 31, at St. Anthony Church (3700 SE 79th Ave. Portland).

    Florence Klein died peacefully March 24 after a brief illness. There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Monday, April 3, at Holy Cross Church (5227 N Bowdoin St, Portland).  A brief reception will follow at the parish hall.
  • Jean Marie Peterson died peacefully March 11 at the age of 85 years old. She was born in Norfolk, Nebraska Jan. 30, 1932, and moved to Portland in 1944 where she lived for 73 years. She attended Couch Elementary and was a 1950 graduate of Lincoln High School.  She is an alumnus of Lewis and Clark College and Emmanuel Nursing Program. She worked as a registered nurse in Portland for 43 years.
  • Holy Names Sister Pat Daly
    Holy Names Sister Pat Daly died March 18, three days after the celebration of her 90th birthday at her bedside at Hospice of Spokane House, where she died. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Spokane.

    MOUNT ANGEL — Arlene Margaret Kloucek, 84, died peacefully March 11. A rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at St. Mary  Church in Mount Angel. A funeral Mass will follow at the church at 11 a.m.

    ASTORIA — A husband, father and friend, 81-year-old Jerry Davis died March 7 at home, surrounded by his family. The funeral Mass was held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church here.

    Catherine "Katie, Kate, Kay" Ann Mahoney Donahue passed away peacefully Feb. 19 at her home on Grant St. with her son Sean, daughter Mary, granddaughter Catherine, and son in law James at her side.

  • Virgil Francis Courtney, 79, died of heart failure Jan. 20 in Henderson, Nevada. There was a service at the First Church of the Nazarene in Salem. Msgr. Tim Murphy will offer a special Mass at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, in Mr. Courtney’s honor at the Central Catholic High School chapel.

    Mary Catherine Vranizan, 86, died Jan. 21, surrounded by her loving family. There was a funeral Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Interment was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

    YAMHILL — Betty Bernice Webb, 79, died. Feb. 7. There was a funeral Mass at St. John Church and interment was at St. James Cemetery.

  • Jesuit Fr. Joseph Shirey
    Jesuit Father Joseph Edward Shirey, 100, died Dec. 22, 2016, at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, California. There was a funeral Mass in the Jesuit House Chapel at Gonzaga University. Inurnment followed at Mount St. Michaels Cemetery in Spokane.

    Affectionately known as “Father Red Socks,” this gentle priest spent his ministerial career as a parish priest and hospital chaplain in the northwest and Alaska. The moniker “Red Socks” was his trademark adornment; Father Shirey felt that priests and religious who wore all black clothing lacked a “playful” or “joyful” spirit in their work; the red socks, sweater, etc., that he wore reminded him to bring God’s joy to others as well as himself.
  • Elinor L. Ries, 95, died Jan. 25 in Vancouver, Washington, from Alzheimer’s dementia.  There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at the Madeleine, 3123 N.E. 24th Avenue, followed by a luncheon. Military committal will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 13, 2017 at Willamette National Cemetery.

    SALEM — Helen Carolyn Ilg, 87, died Jan. 31 in Salem of complications from Alzheimer’s. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at St. Mary’s Church in Mt. Angel. A luncheon will follow. There will be a private interment at Calvary Cemetery in Mount Angel.
