The Swimming Blues from St. Mary’s Academy will be led by new co-head coaches Samantha Sahnow and Holly Vander Schaaf.

Sahnow was on the swim team at Mills College for four years. Her coaching experience includes working in the summer swim program at Portland Parks and the Oakland Barracudas, a USA Swim Team. Vander Schaaf was on the swim team at Macalester College. She has worked for Portland Parks as a swim instructor at Creston Pool and coach of the Mount Scott Makos Swim Team. She currently teaches swim lessons at Mount Scott Pool.

Returning from last year’s squad are senior Rory Kearns, juniors Sammi Redder and Natalie Kowell and sophomore Sophia Hatzikos.

Kearns, who will lead the team this year with co-captain Cecilia Sahnow, is one of the leading distance freestylers in the state. Expect to see her shine again in the 500- and 200-yard freestyle races. She is also a butterflyer.

Redder and Kowell are key members of the SMA medley relay team, swimming backstroke and breaststroke, respectively. Hatzikos was a great addition to the team in 2012-13 and will be back for more butterfly, individual medley and freestyle this year.

Additionally, the Blues are looking forward to welcoming a number of freshmen to the team. Many have swum with local US Swimming clubs.

The swimmers at St. Mary’s hope to better their second-place position from last year.
