Alpine Skiing

St. Mary’s Academy’s alpine skiing team welcomes returning head coach Ryan Rooper, dryland coach Kimi Daniel and one veteran member, junior Sarah Reimann, as well as new assistant coach Ian Park and 13 freshmen.

For the past three years, St. Mary’s alpine skiing team has placed second in the Mount Hood Conference, and has fielded a full team to the state competition.

The Alpine team competes in the giant slalom and slalom events.

New this year, the St. Mary’s alpine and Nordic ski teams have joined forces with the school’s Outdoor Club to share a bus to Ski Bowl every Tuesday after school for training.

Nordic Skiing

The St. Mary’s Academy Nordic skiing team will begin its 12th year of competition. Charlotte Umanoff and Ellen Barlow, senior co-captains, will lead a squad of 21 skiers this year. Jessica Smith-Blockley is head coach.

The team has added a midweek on-snow practice night skiing at Ski Bowl. Nordic skiing is a combination of strength, endurance, balance, coordination and ski- specific technique practice.

Having more practice time on snow allowed the team to advance its skiing throughout the season, says coach Smith-Blockley.

Smith-Blockley will be joined by returning assistant coaches Catherine Jager, Mary Wagner, David Burke, Candace Bonner, and assistant coach/team manager/parent representative Kate O’Sullivan.

The 2013-’14 roster includes Juliet Anderson, Sonja Bales, Ellen Barlow, Georgia Bascom, Zoe Bell, Lucy Cummins, Leila Duntley, Lillie Flagel, Rebecca Goodfriend, Maria Grossen, CateLee Kambur, Layla Kanaan, Maggie Miller, Emma Place, Laura Place, Annalisa Schallerer, Claire Sivers, Amanda Stapp, Emily Sunderland, Anna Tassia and Charlotte Umanoff.
