SALEM — At an early season Blanchet Catholic volleyball workout, the mood was easy, but the work ethic intense. The players stretched, ran and hit through most of an afternoon.

The Cavaliers are hoping to match or surpass last year’s feat — third place at state. Blanchet claimed the crown a few times in the past decade and would like another.

With an overall record of 28-3 last year and undefeated in the 3A PacWest conference, this year’s team has its work cut out. Again, the team’s rival will be nearby Santiam Christian, which cruised to last year’s state title.

Five starting seniors graduated, but this year’s upper class women are ready to lead. That includes seniors Taylor Wolf, Sheila Limas De La Cruz and Bretton Ostby.

“We expect to be competitive again and to see a lot of growth throughout the season with this team,” says Sherrie Bashaw, head coach. “They are a focused group that is working hard to make improvements each day and will play well together.”
