Last season, the Blues finished 20-10 in conference play and earned a trophy for the second consecutive year at the OSAA 6A State Basketball Championships, placing sixth overall.

Seven players graduated in June and, drawing from the skills they honed playing for the Blues, have gone on to play at the collegiate level.

Taelor Ross is attending Seattle University and was recently named pre-season Freshman of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference. Zoie Sheng and Sha’Nice Storey are attending the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, with Sheng currently starting as point guard and Storey seeing significant playing time. Storey recently was named one of the “Fantastic 15” for the Pacific Western Conference. Andrea Gloss is attending Northwest Christian University in Eugene and is currently starting for the Beacons.

This year, senior Nae Torregano enters the season as a two-year starter and three-year varsity member with First and Second Team All-Mount Hood Conference honors to her credit. Sophomores Tyschal Blake and Martina McCowan both saw considerable playing time last season, moving into starting roles at the state tournament, and are emerging as standouts this season. Seniors Ana Davis and Holly Fuhrer along with sophomore Tasia Bilbrew round out the list of returning varsity players.

The varsity team also welcomes a number of new players this year: seniors Pam Carter, Claire Flynn, Jackie Lanz, Blaire Sellers, Elise Sunderland and Margo Twohey; junior Cece Wooten; and sophomore Dyanna Allen.

The combination of experienced players and new blood should make for a dynamic season, said head coach Art Rojas, who also teaches Spanish at St. Mary’s.

“The team will rely heavily on its depth and athleticism as players find their roles and the team develops a new identity,” he said. “The team will play with aggressive enthusiasm both on offense and defense as it fights to build upon prior successes.”
