Christian demonstrators in Irbil, Iraq, carry signs — including the Arabic N — as they protest against militants of the Islamic State.

Hearing that jihadists in Iraq are marking the doors of Christians with the Arabic letter N — denoting the pejorative Arabic word Nazarenes — Father Mark Bachmeier of Holy Cross Parish in North Portland  ran off copies of the letter and gave them to parishioners.

He and others placed the letters on their homes as an act of spiritual solidarity with the Christians, who are suffering expulsion, torture and execution. Christians left Mosul and other Iraqi cities in large numbers as members of the Islamic State invaded. The house markings were a sign that the household could be plundered. The letter is also becoming an icon on social media among people trying to point out the genocide.
