SALEM — Some people just work from the heart.

According to the Oregon Rehabilitation Association, Stephanie Brown of Catholic Community Services of the Mid-Willamette Valley and Central Coast is one of them. The organization chose Brown to receive its Works of Heart award for her service to people with disabilities. The association supports and represents other nonprofit organizations that help people with disabilities. Brown is one of 20 workers who received special recognition.

Brown is assistant manager at one of Catholic Community Services' residential homes in Canby that serves adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Often, residents are medically fragile and nonverbal. She was nominated by fellow staffers and chosen for her on-going investment in building a trusting relationship with a resident with severe autism. The citation said Brown puts residents’ needs before her own.
